Determination Of Nearshore Wave Conditions And Bathymetry From X-Band Radar Systems

چکیده
Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL) deployed an X-band (9.8GHz, 3cm wavelength) marine radar during the European COAST3D field experiments in Teignmouth, UK. The study site is a complex three-dimensional tidal inlet. A sequence of 64 radar images was collected at time interval of 2.25s every hour. Although realistic-looking wave patterns are observed in the radar images, it is still unclear how the radar image intensities are related to the sea surface elevation. Marine radars rely upon the scattering of incident electromagnetic waves by the ocean surface to detect ocean waves. Since the 3-cm wavelength of the X-band radar is much smaller than the typical wavelength of gravity waves, it

An X-Band Radar System for Bathymetry and Wave Field Analysis in a Harbour Area
Marine X-band radar based systems are well tested to provide information about sea state and bathymetry. It is also well known that complex geometries and non-uniform bathymetries provide a much bigger challenge than offshore scenarios. In order to tackle this issue a retrieval method is proposed, based on spatial partitioning of the data and the application of the Normalized Scalar Product (NS...
متن کاملBathymetry Determination via X-Band Radar Data: A New Strategy and Numerical Results
This work deals with the question of sea state monitoring using marine X-band radar images and focuses its attention on the problem of sea depth estimation. We present and discuss a technique to estimate bathymetry by exploiting the dispersion relation for surface gravity waves. This estimation technique is based on the correlation between the measured and the theoretical sea wave spectra and a...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Current & Bathymetry Determined by Nautical X-Band Radar in Shallow Waters
The wave and current monitoring system WaMoS II is a remote sensing system based on a nautical X-Band radar generally used for navigation and ship traffic control. It has been used in recent years to monitor sea state information from moored platforms, coastal sites and moving vessels. A nautical radar can scan the sea surface over a large area (~ 10km ) with a high spatial (~7.5m) and temporal...
متن کاملA Marine Radar Based Ocean Surface Feature Monitoring System
Today, marine radar-image sequences are used on an operational basis to measure ocean surface wave parameters [1] [2]. In addition, they have shown to be useful in measuring the evolution of individual waves in time and space [3] [4], current and bathymetry fields [5] [6] [7] as well as surface wind fields [8]. The typical marine radar systems used for these applications operate in the X-band a...
متن کاملDevelopment and Verification of a Comprehensive Community Model for Physical Processes in the Nearshore Ocean
Our goal is to develop a comprehensive, verified community model that predicts nearshore hydrody-namics, sediment transport, and seabed morphology changes given offshore wave conditions and initial bathymetry. OBJECTIVES The basic scientific objective is to synthesize understanding of physical processes in the nearshore ocean by developing a model for waves and resulting radiation stresses and ...
